CEO at Nucleus Training Ltd
Mike Smith has over 25 years of experience working both in and with the Further Education (FE) sector, and is currently CEO of Nucleus Training Ltd (NTL) a newly formed joint venture between GEN II Engineering and Technology Training Ltd and ENERGUS Ltd. Previously Mike was MD of GEN II, an independent, not for profit, specialist training provider.
Prior to joining the FE sector, Mike worked for 20 years in the nuclear industry in a variety of senior roles and has extensive experience of working on nuclear licensed sites and managing operations within highly challenging and hazardous radioactive environments. His experience includes maintenance of chemical and active waste plats, the establishment of engineering standards, procedures and policies, and the management of large multi-million pound capital plant and decommissioning projects for both the Low Level Waste Repository and Sellafield sites based in West Cumbria.
During his time within the HR function at Sellafield, Mike started his long association with GEN II; first as BNFL’s project sponsor for the establishment of the joint venture company, then as the company’s first Chairman and since leaving BNFL in 2003 and up until his appointment at NTL, as the company’s Managing Director.

As a result, he has become a business leader within the FE Sector with an excellent track record of managing growth and increased quality in the provision of training and education services. He is also well experienced in higher education, further education (colleges) and school governance.
