FE and Skills sector leadership: the next generation
LSIS is supporting the sector's leaders of tomorrow by holding a conference to help them learn new skills and develop existing ones. The LSIS 'Leadership and management conference 2012, FE and skills sector leadership: The next generation' is being held in London on Wednesday 29 February.
If you are a first line or middle manager working within further education and skills then you'll benefit from listening to keynote speakers from the sector and taking part in practical sessions on leadership in practice.
The programme for the day will be based around three key themes:
Understanding the context for future leadership
The conference will address how the national policy landscape will influence what is required from the next generation of leaders in the sector and how these future challenges could be met.
Next generation leadership
An experienced and successful college principal will outline their personal journey to executive leadership, examining the ways in which those currently in first line and middle management positions can develop in order to progress.
Skills development
Delegates will take part in a number of leadership in practice sessions designed to help develop the new thinking and skills required to be a successful leader in the sector.
Areas to be explored in these sessions will include the role of leadership in:
• meeting the needs of learners
• collaboration and partnership
• entrepreneurship
• developing people
You can enrol now by visiting the leadership and management conference page on the LSIS events portal.
Leadership for work based learning - new dates
The emphasis on improving leadership will also be on the agenda at another LSIS development event. The Leadership for Work Based Learning course is a four-day course designed to help sector professionals:
• learn new tools and develop ideas and skills to apply them in the workplace;
• contribute to organisational development and improvement; and
• work with peers to find solutions to real issues facing your organisations.
LSIS has found that placing leadership development in context can bring enormous benefits for managers and have a positive impact on their organisations.
The aim of these programmes is to provide practicing and aspiring leaders and managers with the skills to energise their workplace, to engage with and inspire their teams, and to maximise their contribution for the benefit of stakeholders.
Taking place at Aston University Business School, the dates for the first Cohort have have been revised and are now:
Days 1 and 2: 13-14 March 2012
Days 3 and 4: 22-23 May 2012
To enrol visit the leadership for work based learning page on the LSIS events portal.

They will explore matters such as the role of projects and programmes in delivering strategy, how to lead projects in an operationally focused organisation, governance and assurance – frameworks and roles, project leadership and risk.
The workshops will be delivered by specialists in the leadership and management of programmes, projects and change in the public and not-for-profit sectors. They have been designed specifically for senior managers in FE and Skills organisations and will be available at three locations in the north, Midlands and south of England in April and June 2012.
