LSIS responds to training and development needs of governors and clerks

12/09/2011

LSIS has announced two key initiatives to help in the drive to achieve the highest quality leadership for the FE sector.

The autumn schedule of induction training and boardroom briefings for clerks and governors will swing into action in October.  It will be supported this year by a newly-revised set of governance training materials.

Booking is now open for the autumn training events, which include not only induction sessions but also workshops focusing on issues such as audit and risk management, finance and funding, and how to survive and succeed with less.

In addition, there are specific inductions for student governors, in line with the NUS-led support programme.

The overall aim is to build the confidence and understanding of governors and clerks, enabling them to contribute even more effectively to their organisations.

Details of forthcoming training events are listed below.  Wherever possible, they are held in sector venues for maximum convenience.  Places can be booked via our online system.

Meanwhile, the LSIS Leadership Skills for Governance team is producing new training materials in response to demands from the sector.

These resources update and revise paper-based resources originally drawn up in 2002 by the Learning and Skills Council – with separate versions for governors and for clerks to governors and corporations.   Although popular, they had become very out-of-date and no longer available in print.

To be accessed online, the refreshed materials will reflect the ways in which the roles of governors and clerks have developed and changed since the original publication.  The two sets of modules will also be combined to form a comprehensive overall set of training materials, enabling clerks and governors to gain a more detailed understanding of their colleagues’ roles too.

Further updates will be given as the project progresses.  If, in the meantime, you have any queries, please contact Katy Shannon at: Katy.shannon@lsis.org.uk.
