Three new case studies turn the spotlight on topical issues for the sector

Latest case studies on the Excellence Gateway provide an illuminating look at the innovative work of providers. This month we highlight the following projects:
Solihull College: Using technology to support the detection and deterrence of plagiarism
The college has adopted a blended approach to tackling plagiarism by combining formally taught research skills with the use of technology. As a result, tutors have seen improvements in research practice. Learners are taking far more responsibility for - and care in - what they use and submit.
Trafford College: Viral videos by media students increase motivation, retention and achievement
The college’s marketing team wanted to engage with prospective students through social media, as they felt it would be a good way to engage learners in schools. They were aware, however, that viral videos they developed themselves might not appeal to their target audience in the right way. Students on the First Diploma Media therefore took on the challenge of creating the videos. The result has been hundreds of hits on Trafford's YouTube channel, an increase in student motivation and improved course retention and achievement.
Action for Children: Students learn collaboratively using Google Apps for Education
Paul Kendrick, Vocational Trainer for Action Training, has created a bespoke virtual learning environment (VLE) utilising Google Apps for Education. Learners and trainers now have greater ownership of their learning environment and can select which applications best suit their learning needs. They can also work more collaboratively as they are able to share documents with other learners and trainers across different locations.
