Post-16 Citizenship learning pack inspired by London 2012
The Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) has published a pack of support materials inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in London in 2012. Joining the Game – Themes for post-16 citizenship uses ideas associated with the Games to inspire learners’ thinking about their roles and responsibilities within society.
The pack carries the London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the Inspire programme which recognises projects inspired by the 2012 Games, and features a foreword by Sebastian Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. It includes background information on the social, moral and ethical values at the heart of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It also uses the universal principles of respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality as a spur for learners to consider and debate contemporary citizenship issues.
Citizenship learning is active, reflective, learner-led and community focused. It is always most successful when young people help plan the activities, identify real, topical issues of concern to them, take action on these issues and make a difference in their local and wider communities.
LSIS chief executive Roger McClure commented on LSIS attaining the London 2012 Inspire mark for the pack: “We are delighted to be associated with London 2012 in this way. The values at the heart of the learning pack are mirrored by those listed by the Organising Committee. By collaborating with London 2012, we can continue our drive towards supporting excellence in the learning and skills sector.”
Joining the Game – Themes for post-16 citizenship will be available soon on the Excellence Gateway (www.excellencegateway.org.uk).
