Jill Westerman

Principal, Northern College for Residential Adult Education

Jill Westerman is principal of the Northern College for Residential Adult Education, which is based in South Yorkshire.  The Northern College is one of only four long-term adult residential colleges in England.  It has been designated a Beacon provider since 1999, firstly by the FEFC and more recently by the LSC.

Jill has been principal since September 2007.  She began working at the college in 1993 teaching in the areas of literacy, English and community education, moving on to manage the Skills for Life and Access to HE programmes before joining the Senior Management Team in 2002.  She is an additional inspector for Ofsted and previously ALI.

Before the Northern College Jill worked in adult education in London: in Camden and Southwark and at East Ham and Rotherham colleges, as well as teaching gypsy and travelling families in the West Midlands Travellers’ School.

Her previous jobs included community work on East London council estates and teaching English in Spain.
