Joan Lawrence

Governor, Craven College

Until the end of this academic year Joan worked continuously in education and training across a broad spectrum of institutions, some of which no longer exist with their essential functions transferred elsewhere. These include an industrial training board, polytechnics, a mixed FE college, universities and schools. She also worked extensively in quality assurance across the sector as a review chair for QAA and as an Access to HE course moderator. These roles have provided Joan with valuable insights to courses and delivery methods across a large number of institutions. Her major academic discipline is economics and she has also taught the closely aligned subjects of mathematics, quantitative methods, computing, politics and business studies. Joan has twenty-five years of public examining experience in economics including chief examining.

Joan has been involved in educational governance for over 30 years but Craven College has been her first FE experience. Recently elected as chair of governors, she was also chair the quality and standards committee. In the past Joan has also served on several health service bodies including the Community Health Council and as a non-executive director of a Hospital Trust.

Joan takes part in other voluntary involvements with the elderly as a director of the local centre for elderly support and with stroke survivors.

She spends her leisure time in a newly found interest in carriage driving. She recently followed a course in horse management at Craven College.
