Annual Governance Conference 2012

Accountability to your community - meeting their needs

Manchester Midland Hotel, 22 - 23 March 2012

"My first conference - I enjoyed the debates. Left me with themes to progress and review within the framework of my college to see what is useful for us."  - Delroy Brown, Governor, New College Nottingham

'The government is committed to freeing colleges and training providers from central control and regulation so they are better able to respond to the needs of their learners, employers and communities' - BIS consultation New Challenges, New Chances. August 2011

Overview

The ever changing landscape for FE and Skills creates opportunities, challenges and risks for colleges. The increased accountability to the community they serve demands a new way of communicating and doing business. Many colleges and providers are already considering how they can change to better serve their community and meet the skills agenda, adopting alternative business and collaborative models.
This year's conference will:

  • Set out the current policy and landscape.
  • Give practical examples of how providers are responding; adopting new structures, new partnerships and new business models.
  • Explore what this means to governance in the FE sector.
  • Facilitate an opportunity for participants to discuss the key questions they should be asking back in their institutions.

In response to feedback from last year, the conference will also provide specific interest programmes. A strand for chairs and governors and a strand for clerks which will be designed by chairs and clerks, plus a third programme on Governance Theory and Practice - showcasing recent research and theory that underpins outstanding governance.
