Competition winners

Guildford College, HillCroft College and City College Norwich came first, second and third in the prize draw competition run at the LSIS stand at the Association of Colleges annual conference recently.

As first prize winner Guildford College won a day work shadowing our Chief Executive Rob Wye, second placed Hill Croft College won £1,000 of LSIS Accounts to support their drive for improvement, and City College Norwich won a day work shadowing our new Executive Director of Improvement and Strategy, Chris Cherry.

Leaders in work-based learning

Our four day Leadership for Work-Based Learning course provides an opportunity to:

  • learn new tools and develop ideas and skills to apply them in the workplace;
  • contribute to organisational development and improvement; and
  • work with peers to find solutions to real issues facing your organisations.

The course will run on 24 and 25 January and 13 and 14 March next year and is also available as an in-house course run on dates and at times that suit participants’ own schedules.

Growth Review addressing feedback from employers

On the 29 November, Phase 2 Growth Reviews were published alongside the Chancellor’s autumn statement. The Growth Review on education and skills builds on existing reform agendas that are already being implemented across education and skills policy, and addresses feedback from employers about how the education and skills systems respond to their needs.

FE and skills sector leadership: the next generation

As announced in last month’s newsletter, the 2012 LSIS leadership and management conference will take place on Wednesday 29th February 2012 at One Drummond Gate in Victoria, central London.

The conference is aimed at first line and middle managers from across the further education and skills sector, and the day will consist of a combination of keynote speakers from the sector and dynamic practical workshop ssessions on leadership in practice.   

The programme for the day will be based around three key themes:

Growth and Innovation Fund re-opening for business

Business Secretary Vince Cable and Skills Minister John Hayes re-opened the Growth and Innovation Fund (GIF) on 23 November. The GIF helps businesses develop skills solutions tailored to their needs.

BIS will provide £34 million for 2012-13. There is still £29 million available to bid for with the balance sustaining existing projects. With matched business funding there will be around £60 million available this year. Comparable levels are planned for the next two years.  The GIF already supports 15 projects.

In-house delivery brings a new dimension to LSIS leadership programmes

First-line and middle managers can now benefit from in-house leadership programmes designed to reflect the real challenges and opportunities they face in their roles.

Based on its longstanding experience, LSIS has found that placing leadership development in context can bring enormous benefits for managers and have a positive impact on their organisations.

LSIS is now extending its in-house delivery options – with participants being able to undertake training in their own premises on dates and at times to suit their own schedules.

£250m to give employers power over skills training

Businesses will be given the power to design, develop and purchase vocational training programmes under a £250 million plan announced on 17 November by the Prime Minister.

The plan is part of the government’s growth review and is being championed by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES). UKCES and the government will issue a joint prospectus in the New Year and employers will be invited to bid for funding.  Projects should begin later in the year.

Sector Management College

Delivered in partnership between LSIS and the Association of Colleges, the Sector Management College (SMC) is a unique modular programme that can equip existing junior and middle managers in the further education and skills sector with the practical knowledge and skills to become highly effective managers. 

Feedback and positive comments inspire Excellence Gateway developments

We have been pleased with the large number of positive comments we received, as well as the very useful feedback that we gleaned in our survey of users as part of the development of our new site.

The Web Services team at LSIS is now pulling all the feedback together as it sets out to conquer any technical challenges, before applying the finishing touches to the look and feel of the site. The new Excellence Gateway will be coming soon in the New Year.
