LSIS funded research highlights lack of women on college boards

New research has found that women are under-represented on further education (FE) college boards of governors.

The research, which was funded by the Learning and Skills improvement Service (LSIS) and performed out by the Women’s Leadership Network (WLN) was conducted in the context of Lord Davies’ February 2011 report, Women on Boards, which highlighted the under-representation of women on corporate boards. The report considered the positive contributions of those women who were on boards and made a series of recommendations to improve the gender mix.

Adult Community Learning providers asked to fill in survey

Organisations within the adult community learning (ACL) sector are being encouraged to fill in an annual workforce data survey.

The Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) in partnership with membership body Holex, is undertaking the annual workforce data surveys for the ACL sector.

LSIS and Holex are calling upon ACL providers to complete the survey online. Once the data is collected, LSIS will analyse it and produce a report, which will then be disseminated to the sector. 

Supplement to Support Improvement

LSIS has joined forces with FE Week to produce a supplement about Supporting Improvement.

The special publication explores themes linked to supporting improvement, and contains articles from leading figures from across the FE and Skills sector.

Articles include reaction to the recent Ofsted and LSIS publication How Colleges Improve, and two articles from college Principals who discuss their personal experiences of Ofsted inspections.

National Occupational Standards released in Welsh

The National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Coaching and Mentoring in Welsh have been unveiled.

They were launched at the National Training Federation for Wales (NTfW) annual conference, Venue Cymru, Llandudno, which took place on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 October.

The new NOS have been revised by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), with input from the coaching and mentoring professionals from across the UK.

As well as launching the NOS, LSIS sponsored a workshop about proposals for the registration of the wider education workforce in Wales.

FE and Skills gets on the fast track to better health

Eighteen further education and skills providers have fast-tracked their way to a healthier future.
They have just gained Healthy FE and Skills recognition, as part of a programme supported by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and Skills Funding Agency. The programme provides a framework for providers to promote health and wellbeing amongst learners and staff. To gain recognition providers undertake a self-review and develop a two-year action plan to improve health and wellbeing.

Sector helps shape the future teacher and trainer qualifications

The FE and Skills sector has been working with LSIS to shape the review of teacher and trainer qualifications that is taking place this autumn. From Monday 15 October to Friday 26 November we are inviting feedback on the proposed changes to ensure that the new qualifications meet the needs of our diverse workforce.

A continually Aspiring Principal

Principal, Elisabeth Johnson, has been overseeing some substantial changes at Ruskin Mill College in Gloucestershire. Since taking on the role of Principal in 2010, she invested in her management team, introduced a new way of communicating with staff and oversaw the addition to the college of a new teaching farm.

Equality and diversity projects are announced

The further education and skills sector is to benefit from a series of projects that will advance equality, diversity and inclusion.
The 44 providers which made successful bids for the Equality and Diversity Partnership Project Fund 2012-2013 have been announced. The fund is a partnership between the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and the Skills Funding Agency. 
In August, learning providers were invited to bid for grants worth up to £25,000.
