The Blueprint for Careers: pointing the way to success
Published:
28 October 2011 As employment becomes more difficult to secure, the FE and skills sector is improving the support it gives to learners to enter the job market successfully. LSIS is supporting providers to improve the career development services they offer to their learners – with the unveiling of The Blueprint for Careers.
The Blueprint represents an exciting new approach to help individuals at any age or stage manage their careers and make effective and well-informed choices as they navigate their way through life, learning and work.
At a time of growing concern over unemployment especially youth unemployment, it is set to become a vital tool to support learners in making the most of opportunities and dealing with the challenges of the current jobs market.
Building upon successful international practice, the Blueprint approach has been developed by LSIS for the English context. A brief guide has now been published and a full implementation guide will be available in early 2012.
The Blueprint framework consists of 11 career learning areas organised under three key headings:
• Understanding and developing myself
• Exploring life, learning and work
• Developing and managing my career
It has already been trialled by a range of learning organisations across England and has proved useful in informing curriculum development, improving learners’ decision-making and employability skills, and preventing drop-out.
Available free to any organisation, it can be used not only by careers professionals but also by teachers helping their students prepare for life and by managers and HR practitioners looking to develop the careers of their staff.
You can find out more about the Blueprint and how it was trialled – and download a range of relevant reports – on the Excellence Gateway.
When it is published early next year, the full implementation guide will include a complete set of indicators for the 11 learning areas, suggested uses and guidance on development activities. It will also feature self-audit tools for individuals and organisations.
