Experts from fields as diverse as hospitality, utilities and the nuclear industry are taking their places as new trustees on the board of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS).

The five new members will replace trustees who are standing down due to LSIS’s board planned succession cycle.

The five are:

Ayub Khan – Director of a shared service provision for six local authorities, assisting them with the commissioning and leadership of contract management of services.  He is also a non-executive director for YMCA England.  He has a particular strength in engaging with communities and leadership development.

Ricky McMenemy – Managing director of Rules restaurant, the oldest restaurant in London. Ricky brings an SME perspective to the LSIS board and has developed an international reputation for hospitality and catering training.

Mike is currently a member of the LSIS Council and chair of the Performance Review Panel.

The LSIS board comprises of 12 members whose expertise reflect both the learning and skills sector and commerce. They bring diverse experience, varied perspectives, and considerable expertise to the governance of the organisation.

The board has overall accountability for what LSIS does and how it performs. It is responsible for the governance of LSIS, for providing strategic leadership and for the stewardship of its funds and assets. It sets targets for the organisation, appoints the executive team and monitors performance.

Trustees are appointed for a period of up to four years and their appointments are approved by the LSIS Council in a general meeting.

From the same round of interviews, LSIS was able to add to the expertise of its audit committee by appointing Dr Alan Clamp, chief executive of the Human Tissue Authority, and Richard Edwards, heading of learning & development at Boots Opticians.

Chair of LSIS, Dame Ruth Silver, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new members to the LSIS board. We had a very strong field of candidates for these roles, and I am confident that we have a balanced, renewed and talented range of members with appointments based on skills and with experience from both inside and outside the sector, which will enable LSIS to capture the opportunities ahead.

“I look forward to working with our new members who will help us to drive forward our three priorities as stated in Refining our Strategy 2012 to 2015, which are: to drive forward outstanding teaching and learning; to forge excellent leadership and management; and to move with powerful intervention both to avoid and resolve cases of failure.”
