Plaque commemorates LSIS voluntary work

18 April 2012 The redevelopment of a Coventry community centre’s play area has been marked with a plaque presentation.
Volunteers from Coventry-based Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) refurbished the rundown play area at Stoke Heath Community Centre, Burroughs Close, Liberty Park as part of a community project. In recognition of their work a plaque was presented to the centre’s manager at a ceremony held on Friday 13 April.
Back in October, LSIS gave the fifteen volunteers a day out of the office in order to complete the task. Led by fellow employees Candice Kass and Teresa Carroll, they painted a wall mural, planted flowers and laid new turf in order to make the area more enjoyable for local children to use.
The plaque was handed over by LSIS chief executive, Rob Wye, to centre manager Clive Ward, at a ceremony attended by LSIS staff, local residents, management committee members and police community support officers. The plaque will be displayed on a wall in the garden to serve as a permanent reminder of the work.
Clive Ward said: “We are really pleased that the LSIS staff stepped in to refurbish the children’s play area. It is a real improvement on how it was and the children enjoy playing here.
”The volunteers were lucky with the weather and I varnished the garden’s fence just in time because it poured down with rain the next day.”
LSIS Events Officer, Candice Kass, said: “Company employees are often contributing to voluntary projects, and my colleagues and I chose this particular project because we wanted to make a difference to the lives of the local children. It was also a good way of getting to know colleagues better and having a bit of exercise.”
